Group Therapy

What is group therapy? It’s an opportunity to really delve into yourself and work through longstanding difficulties with the support of a small circle of strangers. You’ll meet weekly, as part of a group of 6-8 people, to talk about your thoughts, feelings, and reflections in the present moment. Whether you and your fellow group members are talking about big life events or day-to-day happenings, there are continual invitations to more deeply understand what you’re experiencing in your life and why.

  • A small group is a like little world that mirrors the world outside. Whatever it’s like for you to be in groups — whether at work, with family, or as a member of society — you’ll probably experience the same things in the small therapy group. But in the small group you have the opportunity to slow down and reflect on these experiences. You can explore (and work towards transforming), for example:

    • your needs, feelings, and wants in relationships

    • the interpersonal patterns you often find yourself in

    • what it’s like for you to hold the identities you do in groups

    • your experience of attachment and intimacy

All the while, you can also experience the support of others who share similar experiences to you and benefit from many perspectives on your concerns. Many people describe groups as powerful and supportive spaces that allow them to learn about themselves and others.

  • The short answer is everyone! If you have longstanding questions or concerns about your experience of relationships, then participating in a small group may be a particularly good fit for you. You do not need to have the exact same concerns as other members to get something out of it. In fact, a group benefits from members with diverse experiences. Whatever it is that you’re confronting, group can provide a vehicle for thinking about the interpersonal dimensions of it and offer a space for support.

Note: Some groups are also offered for specific concerns. In those cases, the benefits that a group provides are tailored to people with a particular concern. If what you’re looking for is not available in my practice, you can search here or here for other possibilities.

  • I’ve led a variety of different groups in different settings and received extensive (and ongoing) training in group work. I have also taught group dynamics and interventions to doctoral students in clinical psychology and led experiential training groups.

  • If you’re interested in a group, we can meet and talk about how it could meet your needs. This page helps provide some answers to questions you may have in advance.
